So you've decided to upgrade your car stereo system? A great deal of research and planning should go into this purchase since there is a lot to consider. Do you desire a nice upgrade of your factory speakers, are you looking for a Sound Quality overall of speakers, subwoofers and amplifiers, or ar
e you designing a vision-blurring SPL machine? It is important to make a list of exactly what you are looking to replace or add to your audio system so that you can prepare your electrical system for the investment to come. Many people do not realize that their vehicles factory electrical system w
as not designed for aftermarket audio equipment. In fact, most factory electrical systems can only handle an audio system of 600 to 1200 watts. The lower end of the scale being the smaller vehicles and most foreign rides, and the upper end being large trucks and sport utility vehicles. As you increa
se demand, you need to look at upgrading your battery, alternator and most importantly your Big 3. THE BIG 3 The Big 3 consists of upgrading three wires under the hood of your vehicle. You can completely replace the three wires detailed below, or simply add additional wires to existing factory wi
res, the choice is yours. The existing factory wires are generally 8 gauge or smaller and are not designed for the high current demands of an aftermarket audio system. It is recommended that you use a nice insulated 0 gauge wire so that you only have to do this series of upgraded once. The first o
f the Big 3 is the positive charging wire from your alternator to your battery positive. This wire must be fused within 12 of the positive battery terminal connection. The fuse value should be equivalent to the maximum amperage your wire can handle, which is based on the size and distance of the wir
e. If you have an upgraded, high output, alternator you will remove your factory alternator charge wire altogether and use the replacement described above. The second upgrade for the Big 3 is the engine ground to chassis or in some cases, engine ground to battery negative. This is extremely importa
nt because this ground is also what ties the alternator ground, through the engine block, to the vehicle chassis. For this step, you want to add your 0 gauge ground to the existing ground. Just clean the area thoroughly and secure the two grounds using the same bolts and locations if possible. The
final upgrade for the Big 3 is the ground wire from battery negative to chassis. If you do not have access to the frame of the vehicle, dont settle for a piece of sheet metal under the hood, but rather locate the strut tower, remove a nut from the thread, sand all paint and debris, connect the 0 ga
uge ground using a ring terminal on the thread and tighten the nut down. This strut thread has direct access to the vehicle frame and will provide far less resistance than using sheet metal and relying on spot welds. Leave the factory ground in place and clean any dirt, rust or debris from this conn
ection using sandpaper or a stiff wire brush. Through these three steps, you have successfully made huge progress in improving the electrical systems performance, decreased resistance, and enhanced the ability to supply power to your aftermarket audio system. Hooker Audio wiring and connections whe

@nickfs442 What model Yellow Top do you have? A group 31 YT will support around 1600-1800 watts. If you have a group 31 up front then I would recommend the Kinetik HC1200, HC1400 or even another Yellow Top if you decide to go that route. Just be sure to fuse the power wire coming off the front battery, into the second battery and off the positive post of the second battery to each amplifier in your system. This will protect you against shorts in the line from front to back.

@MaxxsonicsUSAInc Well I dont own a voltmeter myself, but by looking at the volt gauge in explorer when at 2000 rpm or higher needle looks still, but idling seems 1 to 2 volts. I havent turned my gain up past half way either on amp . I havent tried it at night yet. Is it necessary to charge it all the way on the 2 amp charger or will car alt do same job? I had borrowed pawn shop and work voltmeter when I had checked it the 2 times. Also when it says 2 amp charge does that mean over 1 hour?

how big of an alternator do you recommend i use for a good 3000 watt rms system. i got 2 kicker zx1500.1(both 2010 model)

@Lewis6776 Never rely on the meter built into the vehicle. They are not accurate. In regards to charging the battery; charging at 2 amps is typically a 2amp constant rate of charge. Some models offer a float charge which works about the same in my opinion.

@THUGGINFORLIFE08 It depends on the rating for your stock alternator. For the exact model suggested, I recommend contacting XS Power Alternators or Ohio Generators. They will be able to suggest the exact alt for your vehicle and power.

Hey I have a 1995 mercury sable and I really want to do this upgrade! I checked the wiring and I can't find the fuse where the alternator meets the battery positive. Can I just unhook the alternator and run straight to the battery and fuse it or are there other things that depend on the factory wiring from the alternator to be hooked up? Any Help would be great thank you!

@yzf7steve In your case you need to leave the stock wire in place. Simply piggy back the upgraded wire from alternator positive to battery positive with an in line fuse slightly above your alternators amperage value.

@MaxxsonicsUSAInc Thank you for the response. I have been searching the net for weeks to find the answer to this question. One more question though, with my car I want to eventually run the 1/0 gauge to the trunk so I can run a couple amps. In your opinion what is the best way to run such a large cable to the trunk. I don't have alot of play in the interior carpeting but I also don't want to run it outside the vehicle and drill my trunk.

@yzf7steve My best suggestions are to keep the run as short as possible. Run the wire along the side of the vehicle that your battery is on and run the RCA's on the opposite side of the vehicle to reduce the introduction of noise. Do Not run the wire outside of your vehicle. Run it through the firewall, under the carpet against the door frame.

hey i have a 2001 ford focus and im putting in two alpine type r 12s and a lpine mrp-m1000 amp and i have some spare wire and i was thinking about doing the "big 3" upgrade BUT the wire i have here is 4 gauge will that work? or does it HAVE to be 0 gauge?

@MrFatman212 Piggy back the 4 gauge over the factory wiring already in place. Your BIG 3 does not have to be done with 0 gauge.

@ian8819 Because the typical run from alt + to battery + does not exceed 6ft, most use 4 gauge or larger for the BOG 3 and 4 gauge can easily pass 175 to 200 amps in that distance. If using smaller than 4 gauge, longer than 6ft on the cable, or an alternator exceeding a CONTINUOUS output of 200 amps or more and the fuse should be based on the wire capacity. This would be a rare occasion and one I have never run into over the years. Nice topic.
